Smithsonian National Zoo #3: Sumatran Tiger

The national zoo is currently home to two Tigers.  Pavel, a 10 -year-old male Amur Tiger who was transferred from the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago a year ago.  Damai, a 9-year-old female Sumatran Tiger that came to the National Zoo in 2011 from the San Diego Wildlife Park portion of the San Diego Zoo.  In 2016, along with Kavi, a male Sumatran Tiger that had come from Zoo Atlanta in order to have a love connection with Damia, she gave birth to a lone male cub, but was not a very good mother.  The cub was transferred back to the San Diego Zoo where he's doing fine.

Kavi was sent on to other romantic encounters.  Now, spunky Damai remains and shares the habitat with Pavel, although the two never share the space at the same time.  Different species can breed, but are not allowed to in AZA accredited zoos.

Look at Damai; she's a strikingly beautiful animal.
