Are you ready for another zoo adventure? Well, ready or not, here we go!
The Little Rock Zoo is a gem! Perfect for a single day visit with so much to see, no way to be disappointed. Excepting , of course, if you go on a cool, rainy day--but still, not disappointed. We arrived shortly after it opened in the rain, and I'm fairly sure we were the first paying guests. We startled the ticket booth person away from her book. So I didn't have high expectations for seeing a lot, but I was wrong.
The first curious thing that I noticed was a decidedly Asian theme to the holiday lights paraphernalia. Same as the Memphis Zoo. Is there something I don't know about Christmas this year? was my second thought. To start our tour let's look at the first two habitats located adjacent to the entrance going counter clockwise. On the right is a pair of islands home to Siamang. We never ended up seeing them, but at times throughout our journey, we HEARD them! I figured they were complaining about the chilly rain! Who could blame them?
To the left was the Penguin habitat. Like Memphis, Little Rock is home to a modest colony of African Black-footed Penguins. The birds weren't out, but a keeper was their power washing the detritus from the previous day and seeing us promised to have the birds out very soon. So after a short visit to some other habitats, we returned to see the Penguins.
Siamang Habitat
In general the landscaping is very attractive and cohesive throughout the zoo.
African Black-footed Penguin habitat.
You can walk around the entire habitat with underwater viewing options on the back side.
Note the adolescent in the middle, a good sign that the colony is breeding.
Handsome fellow!
Parting shot.
More Asian Themed Splendor!
