Eastern Song Sparrow

Seen at the Jasper Crane Rose Garden in Wilmington, Delaware.

Jasper Crane Rose Garden

A wonderful discovery near the Brandywine Zoo!

Brandywine Zoo: Phase Two

It was nice to see the progress on the new Animal Quarantine/wellness building, as well as, all the general upgrades to habitats, fencing, and public use spaces.  When the zoo last it's Tiger, the removed the habitat and created a little amphitheater space.  This facility has continued to upgrade to include an area for animal handlers to share ambassador animals, and other displays geared toward education.  I admit, this is pure zoo-geek territory!
AMPHITHEATER, etc.

The Education Amphitheater and other areas where the old Tiger habitat once stood.

With the foundation and retaining walls in place, the interior and exterior walls and frame can begin to take shape.

Cicada Central

I live in the midst of one of the Brood X regions and the Cicadas are here.  They arrived about a week ago in small numbers and then have been piling on ever since!  The cool (downright chilly) temps of the past two days have caused them to lay low, but tomorrow, summer is back and I expect them to return to their love songs and mating.  There is no evidence that that part of their short lives above ground has started yet.  I anticipate another 26-32 days of the heaviest presence.  As life forms, they don't bother me in the least; however, their singing in such numbers makes it all but impossible to hang out on my deck.  A small price to pay for this unique species' survival.

Brandywine Zoo: New Arrivals

The next phase of improvements will transform Brandywine Zoo's entrance and establish a new multi-species habitat with Caribbean Flamingos, Sloth and Southern Pudu.  A pair of Southern Pudu has arrived along with a pair of Toco Toucans.

Architect's plan and artist's rendition of the new entrance plaza.

The new habitat shared by the Southern Pudu and Toco Toucans.  This is not the one that will be created at the entrance, but bring the Southern Pudu on board ahead of that will help people want to support it's creation.
