I had mentioned the Addra Gazelles, a critically endangered species native to Africa's Sahel region on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, in my previous post about the Maryland Zoo. This diminutive little gazelles are also called Damas Gazelles (the Smithsonian National Zoo's chosen identifier) and Mhorr Gazelles--the consequence of living in a region where Arabic, French and Tuareg are spoken. While some zoos have struggle to breed them, this has been a very good year here at the Smithsonian National Zoo. Again out at the Leesburg facility, three calves were born in the space of a two week period in September of 2017.
