As I mentioned, this zoo's origins predate the formation of the actual zoo by about 70 years. Vestiges of its original life as a game preserve remain, and you can experience them on your way out. The exit is a long and winding one-lane, one way drive that will take you up the valley and then on to the top of the ridge. Along the way you might be able to see both Elk and American Bison roaming free in some of the preserves 1,100 acres of pasture and woods. There are also many walking trails in the park and a place for picnics outside of the zoo as well as very generous space for eating inside the park with both concessions and a gift shop. A real gem in the middle of nowhere.
A small group of Elk on the ridge up near the edge of the woods and a close-up of two of them.
The view from the top of the ridge. The zoo is in the center below.
A beautiful herd of American Bison complete with this little newborn! Still a little wobbly on its legs.
Shout out to my faithful little Nissan Frontier. Makes road trips fun.
