The Maryland Zoo is home to a pair of African Lions that are maintained as companion animals. Hasan is the male and is roughly twice the age of his companion female, Zuri. The renovation increased the size of their habitat slightly, but more importantly opened is up was a plaza and state of the art viewing options. The old habitat was secluded. The new habitat also comes with a water feature that allows the lions to bathe if they so choose and faux rocks that include heating elements to enhance the lion's experience on cold days.
