Synetic Theater: My Father's Dragon

Based on the children's book of the same title by Ruth Stiles Gannett first published in 1948, it traces the adventures of Elmer Elevator as he go to a magical "Wild Island" to rescue a baby dragon from the slavery to the island's animal inhabitants.  The story line is a series of encounters and how with just his wits and some common items he outsmarts one after another until finally freeing the dragon.

As is their style, Synetic Theater's retelling is don't completely without words.  The actor's use movement, expression, dance, supported by costumes, make-up, lights, sound, sets, and props, which in this instance included a series of wonderfully crafted and amazingly animate puppets.  Every year this theater group produces 5 plays, and December is the production designated as its "Family" production.  The show starts @ 1:30 for the matinee performance and runs approximately 68 minutes.

Everytime I attend a show here my heart is beating with tremendous anticipation.  And every time it is not disappointed.  This is storytelling at its purest and finest.  The actors tell the story with joy and great vitality.  I cannot recommend taking this production in enough.  It's there through January 6, 2019.  I think the photos say more about the beauty of this show than my words can.  Enjoy!
