Salisbury Zoo - Salisbury, MD (from June 24

Driving south the length of the state of Delaware to my second zoo on this road trip.  The Salisbury Zoo is also a small zoo, but about twice as large as Brandywine.  It's located on the Delmarva Peninsula about midway between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean just over the Delaware state line.  It's also a free zoo located in a little public park.  It's animals are from the America's and Australia.

I don't mean to be mean.  It is a lovely zoo.  But the "Best" seems a little over the top.  I can think of some upgrades.

It's easy to visit this zoo in a loop that takes you along the little waterway where you'll likely see White Pelicans swimming in the pond created on the South Prong Wicomico River.
This little grouping of Pelicans are part of the zoo's collection, but they seem to be just hanging around for the heck of it.

Along the water is a large natural habitat for Patagonia Cavy.
Just beyond this is a large area for a small herd of Alpaca.

Once you've come this far along the river you have reached the other end of the zoo, keeping in mind that I skipped over some of the exhibits at the beginning of he zoo on the other end.  Animals that wrap around a little pathway cupping the  new Educational Cabin.  There are Flamingoes, Scarlet Macaws, Alligators, a Two-toes Sloth, some tropical birds and even a little herb garden with a statue of a heron in the middle.

Now the zoo turns back around and you sort of weave your way back and forth through the middle and to the outer edge.  In the center is a gift shop the sits near a cluster of habitats for small mammals, primates and waterfowl from Central and South America.  A smaller island habitat had Burrowing Owls last fall and now has a pair of Road Runners.  Along the perimeter are habitats for Jaguar, Capybara, Greater Rhea, White-tailed Deer, Red Wolves, Andean Bear and North American River Otters.  There is an American Bison, some Prairie Dogs, a Beaver and America Bald Eagles.  Eventually, you are at the est entrance again, but not before you encounter the latest renovation/addition: A pair of aviaries for birds of Australia and a habitat for some Bennett's Wallabies.

The zoo has a pair of Andean Bears that it is currently hoping will breed.  However, she's going to have to come down out of that tree if this is ever going to work!
