The wonders of the oceans from shoreline marshes to deep trench depths devoid of light come to life in the Sant Ocean Hall of the National Museum of Natural History. You will encounter lots of artifacts collected by the Smithsonian institution over the years from fossils to bones, taxidermied specimens and models of creatures too rare or fragile to endure such a process. I admit I prefer my animals alive, and you'll find a lovely example of a coral reef with lots of fauna present. You'll also find human made artifacts from kayaks to garbage culled from the world's oceans and reformed into art with a message of conservation and ecological restoration. With the museum's Prehistoric Animal/Dinosaur galleries closed, there are examples of these inhabitants of ancient seas also on display. It is one of my favorite areas of this museum.
