Freer Gallery of Art: The Four Guardians

In one of the galleries dedicated to art from Japan you will find these 4 imposing and fantastical gods still acting as guardians of the cardinal directions.  How fortunate are we mortals to be under their care!  YOu have to admit, they are among other things quite beautiful.  A favorite of mine when sharing this place with guests.

They are all dated to the Kamakura Period (1185-1333), but not given specific dates or origins within the Empire.
Tamon-ten, Guardian of the North

Jikotu-ten, Guardian of the East

Zocho-ten, Guardian of the South

Komoku-ten, Guardian of the West
